Learn More about Evangelism

Summary

Mission and evangelism begins in the heart of God. Scripture tells us that “God demonstrated His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) And because “God so loved the world he gave His only begotten son” (John 3:16), and “wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:3-4) Jesus came to “seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10) and he accomplished his mission by praying, going, laying down his life, and sending HIs disciples to do the same.

Jesus last recorded words on earth were to commission His followers on mission:

Matthew 28:18–20: And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Evangelism is simply following Jesus’ marching orders. Because Jesus has all authority, we can share the good news of His kingdom with those he has but in our lives, with confidence, knowing He is with us and His Spirit is at work. Ultimately it is Jesus who saves, but we get to be the means by which others see and hear of what He has done, and how they can know Jesus and his saving grace in their lives too. Let us be confident God is at work, as we proclaim the Gospel in word and deed to our community.
